Updating my portfolio and website -task 2

As part of creative futures we are required to think about ourselves and how we can promote our work and business. One of the main parts of promoting yourself as a designer is having a strong portfolio that can be  seen to really show the overall style of the work to potential clients.

I already had a website with Wix.com since last summer, as it was somewhere i used to sell my products and overall create an initial base for  my work. However, after conducting some research I do love the pink colourful tones of my website but did feel it was too busy and didn’t allow the work to stand out and speak for itself.

Below shows a screenshot of my old website with the main page being my shop. This was good if i was based just of selling my work however, if i want to work as a freelance illustrator it is important for my portfolio to be the first page as when a client is going through a range of artist portfolios they do nt have time t be clicking through and on average spend only 30 seconds, therefore, it is important to have it there making the work stand out straight away.

After doing some research and looking at some other illustrators portfolio it seemed to be most common to stick to a simple background colour such as black or white. This is so the images can really stand out and speak for themselves. Therefore, my first part was to alter the colour palette, i wanted it to be plain yet still colourful as that best suits my style and brand. Other elements i began to change including the layout of my portfolio gallery, the chosen images, and the placement of elements such as my main logo. Below shows the final look it’s a range of initial changes. I felt it was so important for my work to be relative and stand out for itself therefore, I made sure to include a range of different work such as book covers, character sheets and pattern design. I felt it was important to show a range of different pieces and themes and it shows all my interests including design as a whole, surface pattern and children’s illustration.

Overall I am really happy with my updated website looks and feel overall as a much more professional feel by including plainer tones and bolder images.
