How to find freelance work
What is freelance work?
Freelance work is design work that is commisisioned by a client for the artist/designer to create. Freelance work can vary from a range of different subjects and themes. Illustrators are often commissioned for these various pieces as the industry relies on them to help bring their visual communication to life. Examples of freelance work could include, editorial pieces, packaging, branding design and many more. However, the question is how do you find this work.
How to find freelance work
Freelance work is everywhere, however as a new illustrator it feels scary to push yourself to stand out enough to be chosen for the job. From research gathered it is important to build a great network. This could be virtually on soical media, or in person going to professional events to pitch yourself as a designer. It is imortant to keep in contact with people you have worked for, as you can go back to them in the future to discuss any projects they are planning and whether you could be the perfect fit. Similalerly you could search for these people. This could be through linked in looking for the art directors of different companies you like. Or as mentioned in one of my references below go and search for magasines that catch your eye as this will lead you to art directors names and details. This will help you build a great contact list which you could then reach out to in the future.
Another tip that has been recently used alot more is not only looking on job sites but also social media such as twitter and istagram. Art directors are posting direct links, therefore, it is important to keep up with your social media useage and building your presence to be seen.
Another interesting site i have found through website is 'Up work' this site connects designers and employers alowing you to build a profile where you can look for jobs and submit propsals. From research alot of clients are looking for cheaper prices however is a great way to get starter work.
